Republicans are a self fulfilling prophecy. They campaign on how bad big government is and when they get elected they prove it.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Was_Andrew_Jackson%27s_veto_a_expansion_of_presidential_power http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=93 henry clay on how an arbitrary veto power isn't consistent with representative government in the 1830s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_vetoes also a good source because it shows what the founding fathers vetoed and what jackson vetoed and their reasoning. jackson's reasoning was he "didn't like" this or that. the founding fathers brought it back to the constitution (which they wrote anyway). pretty interesting that monroe vetoed a bill for tollbooths and turnpikes because he thought it was unconstitutional. |

at 12:07 AM, Tuesday May 17, 2011 EDT frankly I side with hamiliton, we should have a national bank like most other countries do. otherwise you end up bailing out these banks by necessity and in turn the banks still don't loan money.

at 4:22 AM, Tuesday May 17, 2011 EDT Henry Clay said that the veto was an extraordinary power. He said that Jackston's vetos were a violation of the spirit of the Consititution. But he did not say they were a violation of the Constitution.
The Constitution does not restrict the reasons the President may give for vetoing a bill. Also, the President does not veto laws. He vetoes only bills. |

at 7:52 AM, Tuesday May 17, 2011 EDT if the veto was a matter of preference and not reserved to protect the constitution the founding fathers would've noted it in the constitution. they put the entire presidential oath in there, you don't think they'd mention that?
same goes for the supreme court/federal courts finding the constitutionality of laws. this was not an enumerated power of the judicial branch but if you know a little about history you realize it came about through an organic expansion of power. wanna know why the president can now take military action without asking us? it's because of nixon, nobody stopped him/objected and now the president has this power. |
