I'm about to logoff for the night, so I'll read the responses in the a.m.
Some people here think the rules are too soft toward cheaters (I catch flack from these people). Some people here think I'm too hard on cheaters (I catch flack from these people). Some people think the site is not moderateble (I catch flack from these people). Point is that I know I can't please everyone, so I'd like to know what the community thinks about cheating and how it should be dealt with. I know, I know, a new IP can easily be obtained. I know, I know, alt accounts can be created. However, based on the tools I have been given, what would YOU do to moderate this site if given the chance? Let's keep our responses above a 5th grade reading level if possible. And if at all possible, please post from your main account (if it hasn't been banned already). I'd like to know who is speaking without having to access my IP spreadsheet FFS. Thrax |

at 12:18 PM, Monday March 15, 2010 EDT 1st offense proxy or PGA = 1 month
2nd offense = permaban And bans should always be IP bans... it would make them a lot more effective. Also, i kinda agree that there's something not totally right with alts (even if I sometimes use an alt). The alt thing deserves to be discussed, players generally use alts to be dicks to others while hiding or to proxy... |

Ban any IPs that play shared accounts (and all associated accounts). Ban all alts and IPs tied to a cheating account; reset all points. Set clear guidelines of proof required to ban someone (ex: a screencast of the WHOLE game). This area seems vague now. |

This is NOT how the game is supposed to work. This is exactly what leads to PGA and the cheating we are trying to avoid. Sure you can build a relationship with other players, but don't let this relationship influence your in-game play. Each color should be viewed objectively with no concern of the actual name of the player. If your best move is to move away from blue and hope to God he recognizes this act of niceness then by all means do this and hope for the best. If he hits you, then calmly alert him of what you were doing so that he understands your strategy in the future. You shouldn't form these truces with only certain people as it is terrible for the game and creates suspicions of PGA and cheating.Colors should be viewed as just colors game-to-game, instead of picking the same people to truce with thus creating a disadvantage for the other players at your table. Who is to say they don't understand silent truces and acts of "niceness" if you don't give them a chance? |

at 12:53 PM, Monday March 15, 2010 EDT Some good thoughts. Thanks for the discussion guys.........keep the ideas coming.
I'm fully aware that I can't moderate the site alone, and I've asked Ryan many times for some help (I made about 3 suggestions for mods). I HATE alts and I think they are the scourge of this site; however, I'm pretty sure they aren't going anywhere. Shared accounts are abused too much to allow for sharing of any type. Unfortunately this is an example of a coupled bad apples spoiling it for the rest. Nothing is more annoying than to see a shared account that nobody cares about donate points while PGEing the person that group wants to see lose points. It's unfair and it sucks. Harsher punishments, as you have probably noticed recently, have become the only potential deterrant I see towards curbing the cheating around here. I can't control zeroing out main accounts lifetime points even though I agree that this would hit egos where they hurt. IP bans are the most annoying thing to work around, so they would probably work pretty well especially when Ryan gives me the list of accounts associated with that IP and I ban them all (like earlier this morning). Anyways, good thoughts. Keep the ideas coming... |
