Kdice has changed - for the worse

Most of the old players who used to play the top level tables have left. the player culture has changed, leaving a void which was filled by inexperienced, culture-less noobs that make kdice now unbearable. It has mostly turned into vflag-fests and mindless flame wars. this post is not about tournaments.
To the old players: why are you still here? To the new guys: what is enjoyable at the style of game you play? |

at 5:05 AM, Wednesday January 5, 2011 EST Monte, you should checkout majorcommand.com. I'm not sure if they're in open beta still but I got in when they were and it's wayyyyyy better than conquer club. I shut down my account (I was wasting too much time on the computer) but if you're curious I can recover it for you and let you use it.

at 9:10 AM, Wednesday January 5, 2011 EST monte, i love the idea of creating maps, and team play, this game would become the halo of risks, the only thing is this isnt halo or risk, fogged games would be copying and to do that i could just play risk, but the 1 problem ryan probably has with created maps is there probably isnt enough traffic like you mentioned, my thoughts are if we build up kdice's traffic "" population... maybe ryan will use his money as an incentive to make a script for user created maps, but i dont know what coding and stuff is it might take him a while to do it, as i heard and im sure you all know ryan has a life and he doesnt play kdice all day long, this idea might take him 5 years

at 3:30 PM, Wednesday January 5, 2011 EST map creating offers many possibilities, both for commercial reasons and for added fun: you could award them as prizes for say 1xtop3, 5xtop25, 10xtop100, or for winning a specific tourney, or 1 for each 1 year membership, etc etc, you could add 1 for free for every account or something but these things have to be playable of course and you need a balanced way to cycle these custom tables in the default set (make them temp unless they get lots of votes?)
anyway, I'd really like to brainstorm about this idea but as with many other great ideas, we have to check if it's worth discussing (read: will there ever be a chance of this getting added, if not, we better just keep appreciating the current form of the site) |

at 2:23 AM, Thursday January 6, 2011 EST 1) Is kdice truly unbearable as a game nowadays?
Why would people still play then... if it really was getting so poor ? No, I love it and why shouldn´t I ? The only serious question that arises would be whether I am hopelessly addicted or still got things under control... OK, agreed: lags and broken tourneys suck, just like wrong point counting within tourneys and other minor mischiefs. As per the suggestion of alternate online games: The beauty and charm of kdice lies within it`s simplicity as compared to many other games. Take almost all unique and timeless strategy (board) games which are in my opinion chess, checkers, go, risk, diplomacy and other you will find 1 feature they all have in common: simplicity, easy to be understood rules, complexity inside and not outside the game (rules, set up) - all this applies to kdice Yet just take 'risk' in comparison to kdice: the quality of a land / continent is mainly determined by the number of adjacing lands (strategic position) as well as the stage of the game, meaning that a land highly valuable at an initial stage of the game (take key lands in Australia or South America) may lose it`s grande worth gradually when the action will have shifted to other areas - in my opinion the kdice solution is a lot better, territories inherit not that much difference in value and ther is no bonus for controlling a continental piece of land 2) old school <> new schol Since I joined merely 1 year and a bit ago, of course I cannot speak about 'ye old ol days' like a veteran with scars and medals all over... in my opinion playstyle is still highly determined by the social integration / network of a player, which means even a poor player with high recognition amd many friends on the site still has much better performance ability rather than a relatively unknown, even highly skilled player - as some put it: the least known player usually leaves the 2 and 5 k table first, no matter what start he got I have faced and gone through dozens of such situations myself (particularly when playing undisclosed undercover alts) in an active as well as passive role, so I certainly know what i am talking about.. My personal preference is to keep an open game which means less gang banging and more recognition of whatever skills and / or starter luck a player possess, giving unknown players chnaces as well 3) Changes are inevitable The concept of any progress and / or evoluton of life is change You get older, younger ones follow and will input their ideas, strategies, values... Adept or die, isn`t that a key lesson of Darwin`s evolution of species ? Do you wanna be a dinosaur of kdice, the formerly almighty 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' who is merely existing as a skeleton in a world of changed environs? 4) Quality issues Are the new champions actually worse players than the old ones ? Aren`t Trav, Loobee, Greek, Happy, Real Nix, Kost, Zoid, Jona, Fonias (to just to name a few) just as skilled and experienxced as Shadolin, Monte, Das or Sam in their best times ? They also know the game inside out and excel at negotiating as well as fending off truces, attacks... I see no deficit in them or their playstyles The community itself and not the game design is responsible to sanction players who play in a non appreciated style....BTW, has anyone ever mentioned that there is quite a big difference in play styles and culture between European an American core play times ? I had to learn to move and act differently at either. Interesting moment when they mix and intersect... clash of play cultures ! 5) Why continuously keep attacking Ryan ? I persoanlly quite like the game the way it is...and it is even for free, rather what I don`t like is how people play at times, say unfair, ruthless, stupid, exclusive club like, just anything that spoils the fun part ( i understand points and ranking at the end of a month are part of the fun, yet it still depends how to earn them) Ryan seemingly merged his poker expertise with dice wars, and here is one of my suggestions also referring to several inputs in this thread: Why not have a counter to double up the points at stake and leave the option to exit for all other players who dare not to? That might encourage more courage.... even though I cannot imagine yet how it could work Well, the programmer and games designer is the one who did all the work, we are just playing (wasting away) If you can do a better job, anyone is welcome to do so... and I bet people would shift to there if it were truly better! Meanwhile Kdice remains my favourite waste of time !!! |

And the complaining if you don't except someone flag is even worse. |
