in generall, grun is right. but where are the boundaries between accepted upset´s and non-aacepted?

so for me: sometimes I´m also really upset. it´s just me - what should I do?

when I´m upset, it could be that I ask my antagonist if he is sick, if someone sucks his brain or so...

but never I would say something racist or against gay or so...

so: challenge someones ability to think, but never his ethnis or sexual roots!

Here are the things I've deemed unacceptable so far and how i've moderated.

1- a player is spamming in the chatbox and everyone is pissed off at him to the point someone goes and gets me from another table to go have a look

The guy is spamming the N word, calling everyone names and is spamming nonstop, which occasionally you read SHUT UP YOU MORON, drowned out by his spamming.

I muted him, then wrote in the chatbox expalining why I was muting him. I said I will return your rights in 2 minutes. At which point, you can talk to me, but if you continue then I will keep you muted.

When I toggled it back on, he calls ME a nigger and continues to spam, saying what are you gonna do about it. (LOL)

I thought that was flagrant, disrespectful of me as a moderator, and highly disrespectful to everyone at the table, who basically cheered when I muted him for good.

I gave him 36 hours of not being able to play or chat. Posted on his profile notes, and returned his rights at the specific time I said I would.

2- someone had 9 of his last 10 xsketch drawings depicting sex, hehe

I laughed but I took away his playing rights for a day - posted on his page why and when his rights would be back.. and to please not try to draw "traffic lights" with a penis goin into a stick figure's mouth (lol)

3- Someone had 10 of the last 10 words on xsketch written out (illegal). I talk to him in person and tell him to stop that or I'm going to hafta moderate, and to enjoy the game the way it should be played.

The next day I check his accounts last 10 sketches and he had 10 NEW words also written out - at which point I took away his playing rights for a day and posted a note on his profile again, etc.

4- person asked in the forums to please ban him from playing so he could study for his finals, lol, so I did.

You might not agree with any of these, agree with some, agree with none. The point is for ALL cases I tried to warn people first to calm down and only moderated when they didnt. Also, I gave short penalties (never more than 36 hours) and left a note on the profiles.

Why? because if ANY mod ever has to moderate those players again, they can see a history of crap.

"I will not mute or silence a player, or take any action whatsoever based on the fact that someone posts something offensive."

Is this not in fact the job of a moderator? To ensure that there is a baseline of game behavior and to hold each player to it?

I find the examples that you're citing to be solid actionable items, but with your previous quote, I have serious questions about how the mods function within this game.

FUCK YOU YOU GOD DAMN NIGGER!

This is wildly inappropriate. I would have reported this and like to see that person muted. This is not behavior that should be overlooked; it is offensive and degrading.

An outburst? Yes, we have all had them and they will continue to be a part of the game culture. But there are a skillion ways to demonstrated your anger and immaturity that would not offend people.

So does each mod have a set of rules that they use as guidelines on how players should be punished? Or do you just make up the rules as you go along?

If the latter is true, we are in for a lot more posts like this... without a clear set of rules that the mods and community members understand, the mods are just kind of floating along with no clear agenda. What offends one mod could in fact not even bruise the skin of another.

Standards need to be set for the game.

Even though I'm somewhat misquoted out of context, hehe, I stand by what I said.

I WILL warn someone verbally to watch what they say, but unless they CONTINUE that line of talk and CONTINUE to actively harass someone, I will not use mod abilites.

Understand this: Just because I don't use a mod ability to reprimand someone, doesn't mean it's totally cool with me. Calling someone a nigger isn't cool, it's childish and stupid. But starting a policy wherein every mod goes around banning / chat banning or otherwise using mod abilities everytime someone is initially offended actually COULD spell disaster to the community.

BEFORE MODS this place ran just fine - so it shall too with mods in place.

As for moderators, yes, it IS up to the individual to make a decision. But don't go saying that is a horrible policy. Hell, that's what police officers are, right? Not every person gets the same reaction from every cop.

Someone gets a speeding ticket from one guy, someone gets a mere warning from another. You cannot possibly tell me that police are unfair and shouldnt exist, as a corollary, because of the need for 100% fairness for infractions.

Really consider the previous paragraph cuz it's a serious explanation of WHY this system is fair, so long as the cops hired are "good cops" and respect the people and try to uphold the best interests of the kpeople.

This is the internet, this is the world in which we live in. Upsetting things get said and crude comments get made. It is a lifelong skill, and an important one, to be able to turn a shoulder and ignore an idiot or someone who offends you initially. Know that you are the better person for ignoring them, or that you are better for not being ignorant or a racist, if that's what offends you ABOUT them. Now, if someone is just entirely out of control and continues to be so... then indeed you can count on Mods to investigate and try to uphold your rights to not be harassed and to enjoy the SWEETASS games here.

For the kpeople, by the kpeople, I stand by my words.

But the difference with Cops and Mods (haha) is that the police have a written basic rules set in which they operate within.

Is there room for personal interpretation? Of course. We however do not have this basic outline and therefore, how can expect mods to be effective?

With nothing but personal influence, I don't think this is by the k-people and for the k-people. You weren't chosen by us and you don't represent a group of by-laws designed by us.

In fact, the post in which Ryan called for mod volunteers had several very qualified choices suggested by the community, yet I do not believe that anyone suggested by the community made the team. Not to mention, it took a long time to get a list of who was actually a mod.

Not a judgment call on the job that the mod team is doing, but just that this was spun as something for the community, but in the end was not rolled out that way.

I use the word you as in the collective sense... this is not something that I think you personally are responsible for... just trying to figure this out.

great posts, XxDiceyGirlxX. i agree with you completely.

also, from what i have seen so far, they can only mod when they are at the table when things are happening (since they cannot read historic chat). and they also said they won't act on reports on the forum (like this one because they cannot prove it). so my question is, WHAT ARE THEY MODERATING? IS THERE A POINT HAVING THEM?

Quoting someones abusive chat makes it even worse.

I think posts like that should be deleted, otherwise the forum will soon be spoiled with complaints about abusive chat giving those fools chance of being read by a much larger audience, thus giving them attention they do not deserve at all.

Hey, calm down... In my opinion Grun's point is valid, at least he has a procedure of acting that is clear and make a lot of sense.

He's even putting here the effort and the patience to explain himself. I respect and apreciate it.

Nuf.

PS1: Grun isn't really my friend.
PS2: I love when someone call me "n00b".
PS3: BR is always right. Listen to him.
PS4: sunvic is surprisingly right this thread. Listen to him too.

... if someone says:

FUCK YOU YOU GOD DAMN NIGGER!

He should be muted immediately.
Thats the job of you as the moderator.

it's as simple as that...

Grun is correct. We had similar discussions on HL2DM servers. A "smart" script was installed to catch players *repeatedly* chat-swearing, saying "noob, fuck" etc., after which they automatically got muted.

The best way to handle those players is to not take them seriously at all. Just laugh at them: they are just bad losers.
