Fatman_x takes the 2010 TAZD; computation of complete standings in progress.
Posted By: skrumgaer at 6:51 PM, Saturday January 1, 2011 EST
Here are Fatman_x's final stats:

1631 22% 16% 13% 12% 10% 11% 11% 22535 Fatman_x

Olkainry38 did not play any additional games after Dec 21.

Here were the two leaders on Dec 21:

1591 22% 16% 13% 13% 10% 11% 11% 21975 Fatman_x
0894 22% 20% 16% 13% 11% 08% 07% 21798 olkainry38

The November scores are below. They were recomputed when I found I had been using the 2009 datum instead of the 2010 datum.

The Test Against Zero Datum (TAZD) is a weighted sum of the squares of the differences between a player's percentage profile and the profile of a typical player with a zero score, adjusted according to the square root of the number of games played. If you would like to enter the cumulative TAZD competition for 2010, reply to this thread in the account that you want to enter.

In 2010, the cumulative TAZD began in April, because some January, February, and March profiles had corrupted percentages.

A minimum of sixty regular games per month was required.

Entries show number of games, percentages, and player name.

A minimum of 540 regular games played was required to remain in the standings as of December 31.

Here are the end of November standings with the new datum.

Skrum, I'll think about the stuff you said after a good night sleep, interesting ideas. Could you add me to the list? Thanks!

skrum, i hate to beat a dead horse, but i'm pretty sure that Vermont, chloe, and i all agree that the best tweak to the TAZD is to make the calculation POSITIVE for percentages of 1st 2nd and 3rd that are ABOVE normal, and 5th 6th and 7th that are BELOW normal, while makeing the calculation NEGATIVE for percentages of 1st 2nd and 3rd that are BELOW normal, and 5th 6th and 7th that are ABOVE normal.

The particular horse that you are beating is MadHatSam, who regularly scores well but has a "horse" shaped profile with lots of seventh place finishes.

Sam's career percentages (approximate, of course, due to rounding on the stats page):
17.9% 13.7% 12.1% 10.3% 10.5% 13.6% 18.9%
And just the last year:
19.3% 11.1% 12.2% 11.7% 12.3% 14.1% 21.8%

Yes, Sam generally has a higher-than-average 7ths percentage (though it isn't atrocious), but he also has a higher-than-average 1sts percentage. He clearly scores well without playing a huge number of games, which to me says that either he likely loses lower tables more often and wins higher tables more often or he wins lots of tourneys (or a bit of both). To me, if you're trying to measure skill at tables, he should be penalised for his somewhat poor 7ths percentage and rewarded for his somewhat good 1sts percentage. Players with lots of points do not always have good percentages. Sometimes they have a large number of games with a small ppg and mediocre percentages.

What I'm trying to say is basically what monte said- having a high percentage of 7th place finishes should not increase your score if you are trying to measure skill. There is no skill involved in getting 7th place.

It's easy to get a 7th in kdice, just like it's easy to fold a hand in poker. The trickier part is to know when to take the 7th or when to fold your hand.

As the old song goes:

You've got to
Know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
Know when to run
Don't count your chips
When your sittin' at the table
Time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done.

There is no trick to when to take 7th. You have stakes in the game but continuing playing won't cost you significantly more the way it does in poker.

There is opportunity cost to consider. You can stay in the game to hone your come-back-from behind skills, or do something goofy, or punish flaggers. But you are giving up time that you could be using playing the next game.
