Here are Fatman_x's final stats:

1631 22% 16% 13% 12% 10% 11% 11% 22535 Fatman_x

Olkainry38 did not play any additional games after Dec 21.

Here were the two leaders on Dec 21:

1591 22% 16% 13% 13% 10% 11% 11% 21975 Fatman_x
0894 22% 20% 16% 13% 11% 08% 07% 21798 olkainry38

The November scores are below. They were recomputed when I found I had been using the 2009 datum instead of the 2010 datum.

The Test Against Zero Datum (TAZD) is a weighted sum of the squares of the differences between a player's percentage profile and the profile of a typical player with a zero score, adjusted according to the square root of the number of games played. If you would like to enter the cumulative TAZD competition for 2010, reply to this thread in the account that you want to enter.

In 2010, the cumulative TAZD began in April, because some January, February, and March profiles had corrupted percentages.

A minimum of sixty regular games per month was required.

Entries show number of games, percentages, and player name.

A minimum of 540 regular games played was required to remain in the standings as of December 31.

Here are the end of November standings with the new datum.

How does noamlang1 have such a high ranking with such a crappy distribution of placement? 35% of the time he placed 7th, and he's 4th in the list? What exactly is this measuring?

Because he cuts his losses quickly if he has a bad start. The strategy works for him; he wins trophies.

The TAZD goes as the square root of the number of games played. The rationale for the square root is that for players of the same skill, their scores will be normally distributed with a variance proportional to theier numbers of games, therefore the standard deviation goes as the square root of the number of games, and it is the standard deviation that is used to measure margin of error.

The issue of noamlang1 has already been discussed in this thread. He does not appear to be lowballing the TAZD, so I will let his TAZD stand.

For 2011, I will be thinking of ways of reducing the effects of being on "the dark side of the TAZD". The "dark side" effects happen because negative scores on the zero level tables are reset to zero. Behavior at the higher levels of table don't have dark side effects. Probably the best approach is to subdivide the zero datum.

There are four classes of player in the zero datum (not counting those who haven't played their first game yet):

1. Losers of tournaments. These are identifiable by their positive PPG's.

2. Good players who start the month off poorly or are temporarily in the cellar later. These tend to have earned total points (games x PPG) that are negative but not far below zero.

3. Consistently bad players. They tend to have earned total points that are far below zero. Their percentage profiles will not look as good as those in group 2.

4. People who cut losses quickly at zero level tables by lagging out. Since they play lots of games, they will have low PPG's and will likely have profiles similar to those in Group 2.

Perhaps what I can do is divide the zero datum by earned total points into two subgroups: the "zero datum" and the "subzero datum". Then use the percentages of the subzero datum for the TAZD. Group 2 players would definitely benefit from the change but Group 4 players would not benefit so much because their scorpion tails will not count so much.

There might be as many as three people interested in this problem (noamlang1, Vermont, and chloe). Perhaps I can get some input.
