The actual "pure" strategy behind the game hasn't changed at all from when Monte was the winning months. There were always the better players, and the ones who weren't as good. Shifting away from ELO placed a much greater emphasis on the number of games played per month, than the "quality" of each of your games. Then with the shift in the site away from pure gameplay, to a model that used member tourneys, and thus reward members moved into a somewhat pay-to-win model.

I would expect that most of the bitter old veterans (myself included, but I never pay attention to this site anymore) wish that the game would rely more on skills and deplomacy rather than requiring a membership. But it's a good business model for Ryan, and it sounds like he can be pretty hands-off and still pull in X number of dollars per month from all of the people that want to play in members tourneys.

It's a shame, because I bet that Monte could dominate pretty well in a month if there was a way to put all players on an equal playing field and the month was decided by skills and player manipulation alone.

it would be insanely awesome if he added an ELO option. hell, it doesnt even have to include trophies of any sort. would just be fun to see who would stay near the top. i doubt i would be able to dominate though. even in my most successful months, i won because of playing more games than others, and luckily not having anyone else crazy go for 1st.

re-implement the ELO side, and i would start playing again. but we all know the chances of that happening. oh well. apparently dead is going to implement a sort-of-ELO system at his site once he gets it up and running past beta mode. will be interesting to see how it goes over there.

For the record Ryan has said to me multiple times that he hopes to implement a running ELO score independently of the monthly competition. Obvious the when this will happen is unknown.
