Deadcode's KDice add-on (beta)

I've created a KDice add-on that allows you to keep track of users and their game play.

My motivation behind creating this tool is that I often forget users and their tendencies. Some players stab; some players are abusive, some players are friendly, etc. It is a huge advantage to know this information before going into the game. Unfortunately my memory is not strong enough to recall all previous games I've played with people.

So I created a tool that remembers for you.

Here is an example of it in use:

The add-on currently allows you to store information about individuals while in game. But I plan on expanding it to also allow you to see the opinions voiced by your friends/trusted users.

I know some people are thinking; "Hey isn't there already a review section to kdice?". Yes there is; however, as many veterans to this game have come to realize; the review section is pretty much just a wall for angry beginners to voice their angst and real quality reviews by yourself/friends are quickly lost in the vast ocean of non-actionable reviews.

This is the first version of this add-on and I hope to continue improving it over time.

At this point; I'm looking for some early adopters to start using it and voicing opinions about features they would like to see.

Ryan is currently unavailable to improve this game; so I figured why not have community sourced improvements in the meantime.

Requirements:

1. Firefox (Chrome will be supported eventually; please tell me if this is important to you)

2. Greasemonkey (A simple extension for firefox; easily installed at the following link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/)

Once you have the above requirements; my Kdice add-on can be installed at the following link; very simple; just press "Install".

Please feel free to contact me via this thread; in game (deadcode); via the userscript website; or via email (dustin at nov8rix dot com).

Usage Instructions:

1. Press "Update Players" while in a game.
2. Green boxes will appear on the upper left of each players avatar.
3. Click the green box and a dialog will appear allowing to you view the current notes you have taken on the users; as well as the ability to modify them and save.

Please excuse the crude nature of this release. I literally started on this tool yesterday. Let me know when you encounter bugs (giving me detailed information about how you encountered the bug will help me fix it swiftly and is much appreciated). Also please give me feedback. What direction would you like this tool to grow in?

As a side note; if there is anyone out there with graphics knowledge that wants to collaborate on this project please let me know. I could definitely use some help making this product easy on the eyes.

I hope everyone finds this tool as valuable as I do. Thank you and enjoy!

yes the + is definitely coming deadcode's way

I was waiting for the server version but the current state of the tool would actually already deserve one

BUMP

also, not super-useful for everyone maybe but maybe some people who easily get offended by people in chat would love this:

would you be able to do a "permamute" function

basically an editable list of people you want to be muted whenever you get online

Yes! A few people suggested this also.

I just got back from a 2 day vac and the new version for firefox is lagging me badly not just in kdice but for all my browsing. I like the auto end turn feature but I'm suffering bad chat and play lag.

The add-on is only in the KDice game; so if you are suffering lag elsewhere it cannot be from the add-on. Did you receive the latest update of FireFox4? I know they are having terrible issues with that version; I personally had to downgrade to 3.6. I dont know if they fixed the issues yet.

Anyway; you should get a FireFox task manager extension so that you can see what FireFox process is taking up your RAM. I've monitored the add-on extensively; I have yet to see it take up more then 30 megs of ram on Chrome and that is very close to the minimum that a Chrome extension uses just by itself.

The code consists of 2 pages of javascript using the JQuery frame work and only monitors the game every 3 seconds.

To give you a comparison; the original Captain KDice Auto End Turn add-on used Dojo (which isn't as fast and efficient as Jquery; but still very fast) and updated the game every 2 seconds; which is more processing then what I'm doing.

Definitely get a task manager for firefox so it is possible to see exactly what is slowing down the browser.

There is only an extension to monitor the entire Firefox usage not tab by tab like chrome. So I closed all windows and optimized my comp for max performance and I still suffered lag after about 2/3 of a game. Turned it off and refreshed and the game was back up to speed for me. It's def something in the app. I will probably go to chrome now though since I guess it's faster and I am getting a tad pissed at Firefox for it's bs....I've been using it for so long though...*Cry*

Btw; Yodel and I talked in chat. It seems that turning of highlighting of flags stopped the lagging.

Very strange; it doesn't lag for me; but I'll definitely look into it. If anyone experiences any lag; try turning off the highlighting feature.

Does anyone else experience lag when using the highlight flags function?

I am not 100% sure it was the flag thing only but I had huge kdice lags when I had it on. It seemed better after I unchecked it but I still had some minor lags afterwards. I was talking to a friend (outside of the game) on AIM at that time, that lagged too, so it could have been that instead
