1942 German production of armaments: ---9,300 Tanks ---15,409 Aircraft ---37,000 Aircraft engines ---69,000 heavy artillery and AA guns ---317,000 automatic weapons ---1,270,000 tons (Ammunition) 1942 Soviet military production: ---24,446 Tanks ---25,436 Planes ---356,900 Artillery ---4,049,000 Light Weapons now the numbers for the soviets would have been less if it had not been for lendlease, but they would still have been outproducing the germans by at least a factor of 2 (seeing as this was the german production for ALL fronts, while to soviets had only the one) many historians already concider the east front won by the russians at the end of the russian winteroffensive in 41-42. from the wiki article "Soviet Union was able to simply outproduce and outnumber the Germans who were not prepared for a long war of attrition" I do agree it would have been slower, but also I have to add, the lendlease protocall "the first Moscow protocol", the one that lasted to june 1942, in that protocol, the BRITISH where the main supliers of the lendlease to ussr, many historians do not concider this protocol that important since the british had a very limited ability to sent that much help. the reason it was the british that helped was that the us war economy was still in its startup phase. this defeats the notion that it was the US lendlease that stopped the germans at stalingrad. ofcourse the russians might not have had been able to attack so offensivly in 1943, and 1944. so the war might have lasted to 1946 or 1947, but we would not have been speaking german in europe. |

at 8:57 AM, Tuesday May 3, 2011 EDT appreciate the perspective, kreuz. americans will be americans, and we will have a deep desire to believe we are more important/critical than we actually are. it has to do with our insecurity due to our <250 year history.
i mean, weve done pretty well for a country with that short of a history, dont get me wrong. but please dont force us to swallow our pride, we dont want to choke. ;) |

at 9:11 AM, Tuesday May 3, 2011 EDT lol, you should meet norwegians.
if you compare our view if ourselves with the view from the rest of the world. the americans pride and selfimage does not even register on the scale norwegians take great pride in the oslo conferance, and the fact that in many conflicts in the world have been mediated by norwegians. BUT, the only thing we got going for us compared to us, is that it is impossible to believe, even for norwegians, that norway is the most important country in the world, so we all go around bragging about being the best country in the world instead, the fact that we are best, and top 10 in many of them makes people walk around being even futher from reality |

I just thought that it has been a big advantage that your country only has a comparatively short history... That's why it's not as fragmented as Europe and only has one official language etc... |

at 10:27 AM, Tuesday May 3, 2011 EDT It was definitely an advantage that our current population never had to go through the dark ages or earlier in our current location. The amount of fertile, inhabitable land we possess helped too. Once we overran the native population, we were basically a modern, civilized people (for that time period) that was building anew in a land whose resources were basically untapped.
England missed a big opportuity losing the colonies. : ) |
