Every time I read about them and their policies, I wonder how people can even consider voting for them.
Am I right when I believe that they hate pretty much everything that's not white, male, straight, married, and rich? Also: what's the point of their obsession with God and religion? I don't think that religion should play a role in politics at all. And I think it's dangerous if politicians from the (still) most powerful country base their decisions on an ancient book. Do Tea Party candidates still live in the Dark Ages? But what I really want to know now: Why do so many Americans actually want to vote for those hateful people? Apart from the fact that I would (most likely) always vote for a democratic candidate, it would be still better to vote for a more moderate repuclican than for a Tea Party candidate. Comments from Americans (Thrax included ;-)) would be appreciated. |

at 6:47 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT Sounds fine to me jilm. Homosexual couples are free to choose whatever lifestyle they wish. It just shouldn't be recognized by law and no advantages should be bestowed upon them. I have nothing against gay couples, I wish them well. But why should the overwhelmingly agreed upon system change for the few? Why must everything curb to the minority? Nobody is stopping you from being gay, you just don't deserve the benefits that come with marraige when you're union is not included in the definition of marraige.

at 7:01 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT How did this move to gay marriage? I'm significantly less enjoying this thread. Gay marriage is a small rock compared to some of the other things going on.
Yes it is a platform that the Tea Party stands on, but from my understanding at least the Tea Party's origins are not based in the religious roots of right-thinking so much as the founding principles of our country. Just a lot of the more popular leaders within the party, Sarah Palin an example, uses the Tea Party to promote their own private agendas like her "fame" and gay marriage. Politicans are very good at twisting things to make them apply to what they want rather than what is best for the people. Which is why the founding fathers put so much effort in keeping as much power as possible in the people themselves. The eloquence of the word choice of our country's most importnat documents are very fun to study. If you have not read them/studied them I would highly suggest doing so. It gives you a different perspective on the state of our country. I did a paper on fascism once and it is scary how many characteristics the US fits. I'm glad that a lot of people are wary about our government. The more who speak out the merrier. I don't feel I need to agree with who they are or what they stand for in all aspects to be able to aplaud them for speaking up. |

at 9:19 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT actually I'll just respond to the most offensive idiotic comment:
"I have nothing against gay couples, I wish them well. But why should the overwhelmingly agreed upon system change for the few? Why must everything curb to the minority? Nobody is stopping you from being gay, you just don't deserve the benefits that come with marraige when you're union is not included in the definition of marraige." You know people are born with their sexuality, right? I'm assuming you didn't choose to be straight. -So 40-50% of the country has enough common fucking sense to recognize the absolute idiocy and intolerance of those who oppose homosexual marriage...so it must be the poor forgotten majority that is "curbed" into...wait...nothing happens. not one fucking thing changes for this slight majority and their antiquated ideals. There's literally no weight to any "well the majority wants this" in civil rights arguments. The majority of the US wanted slavery, the majority of Americans in the 1920s were against interracial marriage. The majority of Americans in the 1950s were for segregation. None of those arguments make much sense now, right? Every adult should be able to MARRY the person they are in love with. Not "civil union" or any other compromising tag people want to use. There's simply no reason to deny them this. This is one big reason why I think Obama isn't a progressive (or "liberal enough"). Because he isn't. Wanting equal rights for all our citizens makes me a socialist? I should move to France because they recognize how commonfuckingsense this issue should be? Sorry, I think the point of being American is fighting for what you believe in and not running away because you're surrounded by hate. And Kate, everyone has issues that are more important to them than others, gay marriage may not be as big of an issue to some as tax bracket percentages, but to others it's much more important. |

at 9:38 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT My biggest issue with most of the conservatives is that they want to cut "entitlements" (when pressed many will be unable to say what exactly they will cut) yet refuse to accept that military spending is the single largest entitlement in the federal budget yet is off limits. The US could double federal spending on education with cuts from defense spending alone and the US would still be spending more on defense than every other country in the world COMFUCKINGBINED. This simple logical disconnect in the conservative movements is disgusting. If you refuse to accept that defense spending needs to be cut in order to be a more fiscally sound country you have no right to claim any identity with our founding fathers.
@Wish, well neither major party is based on the idea of supporting oligarchy, we continue to give power an elite few and move more and more to a social system similar to feudal Europe where the ruling class are corporations with all the rights of an individual with none of the responsibilities of an individual. Fuck that ruling makes me want to kill someone. |

that being said gay couples should have the same rights even if i do consider their gayness to be immoral. I just have an issue with calling it "marriage" |

at 10:35 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT Pretty sure I chose to be straight. You and a whole fucking army of psychologists can't convince me otherwise.
So are bisexual people born confused? I guess we should give pedophiles a free pass too since they can't "control" how they feel about kids. So we are comparing allowing two people that are biologically not meant to be together to slavery, racial segregation, etc... That's a stretch even for you Pierce. |
