at 2:07 PM, Monday August 16, 2010 EDT Most burger-flipping jobs, at least in my area, are held by high school kids with the occasional retiree thrown in. Those aren't the types of jobs that would affect the unemployment rate in any significant way anyway.
Now construction and landscaping jobs would be more likely to impact the unemployment rate. I do remember reading recently that even high school kids are having a much harder time finding a summer job because even the low paying jobs, like working at McDonalds and such, are not as available. I can't remember where I heard that or I'd track it down. Maybe someone else knows. And I agree with your general observation about immigrants. They tend to buy into (and appreciate) the American dream far more than people who grew up in this great country (and economy) those who went before provided. |

at 12:05 AM, Tuesday August 17, 2010 EDT Personally I think the argument that Americans would do these jobs for higher wages is a bit silly. I'm not saying it isn't true, but if employers had to pay someone $8 an hour instead of $4 to pick apples then the cost of apples in the U.S. would rise accordingly (as an example). If anyone has any websites that show concrete evidence for the cost/benefit of illegal immigration in economic terms I'd like to see it.

Ended the federal crackdown on Medicinal Marijuana centers in CA - Check You do realize that Obama raided more Medical Marijuana Centers in CA in 4 years than Bush did in 8 right? The federal war against Medical Cannabis has been amped up hard under Obama. |
