at 4:17 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT Will the Pirates and Royals ever compete again? (probably not) Will the Yankees ever having a losing season again? (not likely with $200mil+ payrolls) Have the Yankees made the playoffs all but 1 season since 1995? (Yes)
Salary cap or contraction. Take your pick. What's the point of having teams in your league that have no chance of competing on a yearly basis? |

at 11:33 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT that's how it happens...take a look at the Rays they were a shit-ass team and through high draft picks combined with internal development, they've established themselves as a serious contender the last few years. and one or two teams having a good run doesn't justify a radical overhaul of the entire league.

at 11:33 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT would you prefer it if every team had the same salary cap and teams like the pirates, royals, mariners, astros, orioles, etc.. become powerhouses? you think the ratings suck now?

at 11:34 PM, Tuesday October 26, 2010 EDT not to mention that even when lower paid teams do well (i.e. Rays), no one fucking goes to their games...so don't blame Steinbrenner and the Yankees, blame the shitty ass fans/poor ass southern/midwestern regions in which no one can afford to chip up a few bucks to see a game played

Yes, I would prefer it this way. There's a reason the NFL is America's top sports league now and a salary cap is a huge reason. Same for the NBA. The cycle is much quicker in those leagues for allowing teams to rise and fall in the standings. The Knicks have blown for a few years, but they're clearing cap space and signing good players. Soon they'll probably have Carmelo too and they'll be back in the saddle for 4-5 years. Salary caps also allow for players to be less mobile and stay with one team their entire careers if they wish. You don't have this in baseball AT ALL anymore unless said player began his career on a large market team. Do you think Greinke will be a lifetime Royal? Is Jason Bay still playing for the Pirates? The reason small market teams can't pack the stadium even when they have successful teams is because baseball has become inconsequestial in most of these towns. Why invest time and money in the Royals which might be good for 1-2 out of every 20 years when can support the Chiefs who will be good 2 out of every 6 or 7 years. Why support Orioles when I can support the Ravens. Why support the Pirates when I can be a Steelers fan. Why support the Brewers when I can be a Packers fan? |
