at 9:04 PM, Saturday April 17, 2010 EDT Forgive me if I refer to "continents" in a geological sense, as opposed to a cultural sense. I realize that, in Europe, it is common for some to refer to North and South America as one continent. However, that is incorrect. North and South exist on different plates. Moreover, "continents" generally refer only to land masses that exist above sea level. Obviously, there are more plates that exist below sea level which are not populated. My point was simply that, for anyone who has even a rudimentary knowledge of geology, that North and South America are separate land masses, are located on different tectonic plates, and cannot be considered to be the same "continent". I am not concerned with cultural interpretations of the term "continent", nor am I interested in Eurocentric interpretations of same.
BTW, the rest of my earlier post was directed at Leeroy, not at you. |
