It is also a location thing. There might be places on this planet where you wouldn't be allowed to log IPs. So your server-log should not contain them. I don't think this is enforced though. And I don't know the legal situation in canada.

Louis, the IP is logged where the server is located, since the tubes are delivering the internets from that server so I would guess it's a matter of the laws at that particular location.

I am not arguing just to argue with fiero, I ran a couple sites in the past and IP addresses are a simple thing to obtain. These days most people are behind some sort of router or other network so it isn't reporting their actual IP anyways, it's the router or switch or something else that is guarding your PC. It's not like an IP address can tell your exact location on the street or whatever, although i guess people could organize a DDOS or something like that against your puny little router if they so wanted to.

Regardless, if you don't want people knowing your IP address, I suggest you quit the internet altogether because your IP address follows you wherever you go on the tubes and there are plenty of people that will be able to find out what town you're in.

Oh and I'm also assuming you aren't doing anything illegal cause then I'd bet the authorities could get a subpoena and force your ISP to give up your location based on your IP address, but that's about the only case that I think your actual location would be given up.
