Any decent Yankees fan would know of a guy whose number has been retired by the organization. Whether or not he played during your lifetime means squat. I hope that you know who DiMaggio, Maris, Munson, and Berra are.

Here are some Donnie Baseball facts for you to absorb and improve your knowledge as a Yankees fan...

"Donnie Baseball" was only the 10th captain to be named by the Yankees in their storied history. The premier first baseman of his era, Mattingly was a nine-time Gold Glove winner. The 1985 American League MVP set records for most grand slams in a season (6), most home runs in seven consecutive games (9) and eight consecutive games (10). A humble man of grace and dignity, Mattingly carried on the legacy of the pinstripe tradition and dedicated his career to the pursuit of excellence.

"My parents are yankees fans and from new york and so Ive been following them WHILE I WAS ALIVE. I prefer to follow sports teams in the present instead of living in the past."

5 of the NYY WS wins came during your lifetime. So being pumped about #27 is kind of a contradiction.

The Orioles do suck I agree. They do have 3 WS wins (66, 70, 83) and were in the ALCS in 96 and 97 which is less than 25 years ago. Before you talk about baseball, please educate yourself.

maybe thats a bit much to expect from every fan though das. i mean, even though ive been a lifelong braves fan, i cant tell you the particulars of seasons that happened before my life. i can mention names like aaron, mathews, spahn, but i cant tell you more than a couple of their lesser known teammates.

but while ive been alive and following, i can name you rosters from the mid to late 80s that were atrocious. ken oberkfell, glen hubbard, ozzie virgil.

so, in my mind, the real test is how many roster spots can fiero name from the yankees bleaker years during his lifetime? if he knows a lot about those terrible years, then i say hes not a bandwagoneer. but if he only names people who have been frontliners from championship years, then he is bandwagon.

but i understand if your definition is stricter. to each his own.

Unfair. I didn't care about baseball when my age was single digits.

Monte mentioned that he could name rosters from when he was alive AND FOLLOWING. This is the first championship from when I understood and followed baseball. (I didn't care about any sports at all in elementary school)

I think some of the earliest things i personally remember about the yankees were Tino Martinez winning the home-run derby and then not being invited back the next year? And i remember Strawberry (Darryl?) with his drug issues. Paul O' Neil, Chuck Noblock (sp?), and Bernie Williams (Big guy eventually let go.... sad :( ) Oh and I remember David Cone... Dunno who else

You're 25 right now? OK, 9 years old is single digits and that was 16 years ago. 16 years ago was 1993. The Yankees have won 5 titles since 1993. I'm going of memory, but I want to say it's 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, & 2009.

So what are you talking about not caring what happened in your single digit days? All 5 titles have occured in your teenage years and beyond.

You just pwned yourself...

Monte, I wasn't asking for particular stats on Don Mattingly. Or even if he remembered anything particular about him. Just asked him if he knew who he was and his answer was "no." They guy is a Yankee legend. Jersey retired in '97. Has a plaque in Monument Park (like all # retirees). Plus he was their hitting coach when fiero was not in single digits.

Maybe i should have just kept it simpler and asked if he knew Joe Torre. Or kept driving home the fact that fiero was convinced that MO never comes in for 2 inning saves. Meh.

I relate it to someone saying they are a Red Sox fan and not knowing who Bill Buckner is. Or that Roger Clemens played for them.

From my perspective this is fairweather bandwagon at its finest. Cheers fiero.
