fcuku,

I have wondered whether a sport represents the political system of a country. Baseball is popular in Japan and Cuba because it was brought there when those countries were occupied by American troops. Cuba is hardly a capitalist country but baseball remains popular. I might be wrong on this, but I think I heard somewhere that Fidel Castro had been a professional pitcher.

it would make sense why soccer and rugby would be so popular outside of the US, they are much more team based sports and are not near as individualistic, especially when it comes to the world cup.

most popular american sports focus on the individual achievements and individual players: football, basketball, baseball, etc. and in the World Cup the apathetic american doesnt care about how its country is represented because there is not a lot of exciting individual play. but in europe and pretty much everywhere else, they play for their country and for pride.

its interesting stuff if you stop and think about it

American football is the most team based sport in the world.

MLB and NBA are individualistic yes, but not football.

well yes, that makes sense thrax, and also why football is the sport of the 'american dream' its what we like to think that we look like, but we really are a bunch of individualists.

Das. How does that make me not a true fan? When you asked me about mattingly i told you 'i know he was a good yankees player, but i dont remember specifics about him'

he retired when i was '7'

same goes for babe ruth, mickey mantle, reggie jackson, and whitey ford....

I know of them, but i dont remember specifics.

My parents are yankees fans and from new york and so Ive been following them WHILE I WAS ALIVE. I prefer to follow sports teams in the present instead of living in the past.

I guess if my team was the baltimore orioles and hadn't won a world series or been relevant at all in the post season for the last 25 years id also worry about other people's favorite teams. Good luck to the orioles next year i hope they improve on their worst record in the AL amazing season from last year. Cheers hater.
