What should be done?

Looks like every time I think I'm finished with changes and things look stable the KDice people find another hole to exploit.

I agree that you shouldn't be able to buy first place (even though that little race paid for the server for last month). The reason it was possible was that it was a bug introduced when kdice moved to its own server and member bonuses were added. I knew about the bug but didn't think it would be used this way.

As for bomb being played buy multiple people I can't think of any solution to this. I don't think there's any way to prevent this. Although the leagues idea is probably the best step. That idea is where different leagues of play are introduced that have different play parameters. For example, 16 dice, ELO scores, or a maximum number of games in a day. Its a cool idea but kdice needs probably 10x the population to make it useful.

Anyway, just posting to get your thoughts on how last months top 3 should be handled.

-i feel sorry for those who put in so much (either money or time) to get to the top spot on kdice. don't you have other things that worth your attention in life?

-and why do people so hung up on people cheating to get to first place? most are ok with people cheating (PGA) to get more points. how is cheating to 1st place any different than to get more points? no one seems to care too much about PGA.

-my only solution is, as always, BAN ALL CHEATERS

Jurg, i thought you read all the posts!

I pointed out that idea in my big ass post, with the addition of giving Jer the third he earned which Bomb would be vacating as well. Also, i believe that there is no reason why this proposal wouldn't satisfy 100% of the people, considering everyone gets what they want and deserves/payed for.

Since Ryan is asking our thoughts on how things should be handled, he concedes a fault. But asking us how to handle the top 3 does not remedy the fault. If he had not asked us how to handle the top 3, the fault is still not remedied. So whether Ryan does anything or not, the consequences of the fault still have to be faced. So if the fault is to be faced, it would make sense not to make any changes, because changes will have further consequences. There is no set of changes that will make the situation as if no fault had occured, because if Ryan had fixed the bug, the actions of other players would have been different, and we do not know what the consequences of those actions would have been.

I jokingly suggested in a different thread that May has only 30 days this year. But that gives me an idea. We could do the following: Select a particular day in May as a kdice holiday (say the 7th, as it is the same day of the week as April 30th). Suspend all May kdice play on that date. Set up the tables, scores, etc. as they existed at midnight on April 29. Allow no purchase of stars. Allow all players to play on that day as if it was the last day of April. Award the medals according to the outcome on that day.

First of all, my set of changes would work perfectly, second of all, Wish actually bought most of hist points after midnight so that wouldnt work very well.

On further reflection about my previous post, I realize that the first and second parts are contradictory. After showing that nothing should be done, I propose that something be done.

If we were to re-enact the last day of April, there would still be one difference: everyone would know that wishbone and DG would have bought stars. So everyone would probably treat wishbone and DG differently. So I go back to my first half. Nothing should be done.

Concur. As stated previously, the problem is not that Wishbone bought points. The problem is that he was able to do so. Since he was able to buy points and the logical extension of that ability is that he could therefore buy whatever position he wanted, he should not be penalized for availing himself of that option. The month is over, the results are in. Move on.

One last comment on an issue that I don't believe has been addressed in any of the preceding posts. If you were going to change the results, you would have to change them across the board. Wish and Dicey were not the only people that bought a star or stars last month and the standings are not limited to just the top three spots. Moreover, anyone who is a member "bought" points last month. I wonder how many people who have posted negative comments about Wish's and Dicey's activities are members and are therefore guilty of exactly the same offense? If you were to make any changes, those changes would have to include all of the players who received their "bribe points". And even then, you wouldn't be able to achieve any measure of justice, because all of the members and star buyers received an unfair advantage by not having to slug it out through the 0 tables.

So, in the end, you cannot make any changes to the standings that will bring about "justice", whether for Bomb, or for any other player. What is done is done. The standings have been posted and should stand as they are, with no revisions.

Some members bought their stars before the idea of giving members 2500 points was thought of. Members have the 2500 point advantage, but also become the target of envy of some nonmembers. So it's hard to say how much advantage the membership is. I play at least 250 games a month so my 2500 points work out to only a 10 point increased mean score during the month.

First of all BR, Wish and DG were the only ones who bought points anywhere near the end of the month.

That being said, im not sure how many times i have to post this, but, here it goes again. The simple and obvious answer to this question is to award them both gold medals. There is no other easy way to change the standings, but it would be wrong not to give Bomb(and Jer) what he earned, and doing this would please everyone. On top of that, the whole point of medals and leader-boards is to show who was best at playing the game and earning points for the month. What wish did, although not illegal was petty and rather pathetic, and although he cannot be punished for it, Bomb deserves to get what he earned (making it clear that they must both be awarded the gold medal).

It is an easy copout to blame the system when it is clear that the problem is with the morals of the player extorting it.
