sexual harrassment on kdice.

it may seem amazing or whatever, but i'm female and enjoy playing kdice. however along with other female players, i receive a lot of unwanted attention and abuse from having a picture of myself, not slutty, not erotic, just a picture of my face, as my icon.

i'm not overreacting here, trust me. i don't mind being told i look attractive. it's a compliment, right? too many in a day and it gets repetitive but, even so, it's no reason to complain.

what i'm talking about here is moments like this, from maybe ten minutes ago.

weedeater: i blow a loud all over the chich in the pick teal
eramus: a loud?
weedeater: load
eramus: hrmm
weedeater: lol
weedeater: got excited
weedeater: lol
Sophalis: oh dear god.
Sophalis: seriously. get a girlfriend or something
weedeater: why
weedeater: i can rub one out
weedeater: looking at you

yea.. i'm really fed up of guys thinking they can say things like that to me and other girls on here and get away with it. i'm not amazingly feminist but behaviour like that is disgusting and inappropriate. this is a dice game, not an internet chat room, and women should be able to play on here without sexual harrassment like the example i just quoted.

i'd like to hear some opinions... thanks.

@Caephus + others

I think Sophalis was merely expressing her feelings on something you have no authority to comment on...

Being a woman in a male dominated game does come with its share of advantages -- the social game aspects can be huge when you have a table full of horny nerds... but there is a downside and that is what Sophalis is talking about.

Until someone has attacked something about you that you probably cannot change, nor do you want to change. Don't tell her to live with it. Don’t tell her that because there is no one to police this issue, nothing can be done about it. Don’t make her part of the problem because she has posted her pic as her AV.

I love when a member of the majority dismisses a community member's refusal to live with the sexual hegemony of the game just because there are not people in place to moderate.

Most of us are (age-wise) adults on this game and those who aren't are old enough to understand what discrimination is. We don't need babysitter to tell us how to act appropriately to each other.

We're so quick to blame things on lack of a dominate force to keep things in line, but do you walk around the streets of your hometown making sexual comments to women? It is not against the law to call someone a gutter slut, but I doubt you do because you understand that there is a way in which people like to be treated.

Once you reduce someone down to an AV – removing all physical cues; things become less personal, but the fact still remains that there are people behind the AV’s, the same people you would otherwise in a physical world extend politeness to.

There is no excuse for this behavior. It cannot be easily written off because there is no policing of this problem. We live in societies where this is not acceptable because it is the dominate thinking of the members of the community.

Don’t blame someone else for the shortcomings and nearsightedness of this microcosm. Look in the mirror and you’ll be able to identify the first problem, you. Stand up for treating all players equal; it’s part of our three basic rules…

No Porn
No Hate
Be Nice

Dicey,

Your point about gaining advantage at a table specifically full of "horny nerds" as you put it is a very valid one. I would have to say that I have witnessed this advantage 100x more than I have witnessed any sort of gender bashing or sexism. Fact as it may be, this is completely irrelevant to the topic of harassment.

You say "I think Sophalis was merely expressing her feelings on something you have no authority to comment on... "

Are you kidding me? She posted them in an open forum. That act in itself not only gives me and others authority to comment, it straight out requests that we do so. Diminishing the rights of any member of the kdice community because you feel this was solely a sexist act, and not pertaining to harassment as a whole, is a bit sexist in itself. This was an act of harassment, and to be so presumptuous to say I haven't been the victim of harassment is brazen to say the least.

As far as walking around the streets making sexist comments to woman, I myself don't do that, but I can assure you that it does occur quite regularly (likely from the beginning of time). You might also be surprised to find out that other forms of harassment occur as well on a level that transcends gender. People that partake in these acts live with the social implications, as do people that behave this way in kdice.

I understand your "call to arms" against the sexist male pigs is a valiant one; But based on your strong words, I can only conclude that my, and other people's posts have been grossly mistaken for something that they are not. I don't believe anyone's intention was to make excuses for this behavior. I think its obvious to everyone that it is inappropriate. Its also inappropriate for construction workers to whistle at hot girls walking by, but it will continue as it has for ages. Our only intention was to offer an alternative, ie "If it distraughts you this much don't walk by that construction site." *warm hug*, "its gonna be alright," and be on your way... I fail to see how this response diminishes, or "writes off" the impact of the original offensive act.

...as far as your closing ambiguous comments about "look in the mirror" ... not sure where the hell that came from, or how it relates to any of this, but I admit it does have a nice ring to it...

@Sophalis,

I think a system like the one you mentioned would be a great addition at combating problems like this. With enough support, I think it could be a real possibility. Heh, I'm not sure Ryan would enjoy wading through the massive amount of reports, but at the very least it may serve as a deterrent to people behaving so rudely...

Although I am not a female, I agree. That kind of behavior is repulsive and disgusting. It's sad the the females that play kdice have to put up with it.

I think the "report" option would be a very good idea. It could also be used to help report foul language and hate speech of All kinds.

One way to try to avoid this right now would be to just not play with those players that are known to do that. I know, you shouldn't have to do that, but, it's a sad world we live in.
