Er zijn verschillende soorten regenwormen. In Nederland en België komen 25 soorten voor. Wereldwijd zijn er meer dan 2200 soorten bekend. Ze komen overal voor behalve in droge klimaten en op Antarctica. Ze variëren in lengte van 2 cm tot meer dan 300 cm en 8 mm dikte (Megascolides australis). Er zijn diepgravers die diepe verticale gangen maken zoals de veel voorkomende dauwpier of regenworm Lumbricus terrestris, die 9 tot 30 cm lang wordt en de rode worm Lumbricus rubellus, die tot 15 cm lang wordt. De dauwpier leeft vlak onder het grondoppervlak en laat boven op de grond hoopjes uitwerpselen achter. Er zijn er ook die in de strooisellaag leven zoals de mestpier Eisenia fetida, die 6 tot 13 cm lang wordt en door zijn rode kleur en soms oranje dwarsbanden in Amerika wel tijgerworm wordt genoemd. Verder komt de grijsblauwe Allolobophora caliginosa veel voor. In humusarme grond kunnen altijd nog 62 wormen en in humusrijke grond meer dan 432 wormen per m² voorkomen. Bij het trillen van de grond kruipen de regenwormen uit de grond. Dit kan door de loopbewegingen van dieren of door menselijk handelen met behulp van een stok of greep. En onder natuurlijke omstandigheden door het vallen van regendruppels op de aarde. Regenwormen zijn vooral 's nachts actief. I'm just going to echo this review, as I found it accurate in a game I observed, where he killed 2 and 3 so as to give 2 and 3 to his 4 and 5 truce buddies.
