I also experienced the lagging out several times when I was close to winning on 500 and 2000 tables, obviously being in a seemingly safe 1st position, or another scenario, suddenly some underdogs (incidentally nothing to do with your 'ava name' ) united all of a sudden, out of the blue and scrapped me away in 3 - 5 rounds, like forming a 3 or 4 <> 1 constellation... it would have made much more sense if 1 of them had allied with the strongest player as to achieve 2nd place...
since luck is equally distributed (average), i guess cheating would be the easiest way to gain considerable advantage over opponents....
I am very much afraid the new point system will even support such doings, since 3rd place is basically almost worthless in terms of points, so you may just waste your dice to support the fight for 1st!
