ghj luigi on Wednesday November 23, 2011 Has erroneous beliefs about what it means to flag. He believes that vflagging in 2nd place should always, immediately be accompanied by checking the actual flag, even though there are numerous situations where this would be undesirable, both for yourself and for the player you are flagging.
Example: you are in 3rd and overmatched by a player in better position, whom you flag. The flagged player (FP) is fighting for 2nd with another opponent (AO), from whom you are separated. If FP accepts your flag, you will be able to sit in peace as the other two fight, filling out your stacks and accumulating extras. If it becomes obvious that FP will win, that is fine; you have flagged him for 2nd and will likely receive that place, unless for some reason a roll or fight is deemed necessary between yourself and AO.
But if AO should emerge victorious, it is obviously in both your and FP's best interest that you should NOT flag 2nd place. If you did, AO would only need to eliminate one or the other of you to claim first. However, if AO becomes the clear winner and you have not flagged 2nd, you will be able to fight him with your fresh stacks and extra dice as FP's proxy; if you win, FP will take first, AO will be eliminated and you will (if you are honest) take 2nd. If you lose, you will take 3rd and allow FP to take second. Either way, you will give both yourself and FP a better chance of taking high positions, and in the process will have eliminated AO's incentive to simply wipe out FP to claim an easy first without having to fight you.
Surely such a simple strategy should be obvious to someone who has named himself after so great a strategist? Or maybe you are overcompensating...
