It is the idea of having an electoral collage and electoral delegates to prevent just that. In theory these representatives are not forced to vote for anybody. With great foresight and amazing vision the writers of the constitution saw that some charismatic person with good rhetorics or great PR-teams might fool the majority of the voters. It is the electoral colleges job to correct this, if a correction was mandatory.

Aside: maybe counting and travelling for elections was just more of a problem those days and thus they created the electoral delegates, still it is not the worst thing to have if they did their job right.
