How to save kdice.

How do you make kdice better? A few ideas I would like to share that I feel would make this game increasingly better.
For starters, a major complaint of mine in previous years has been the chat box. I have always felt you eliminate the chat box, you've eliminated a large part of the problem. Many bitter fueds have really started in the chat box. Some will say "if not for the game play of others..." but I argue trying to hold a conversation with someone when your furious, especially at that individual at the time, is not going to end well most times. I myself have been caught in the heat of the moment cussing or yelling because I was pissed at someones strategy. It happens. It always leads to feuds that carry over into other games, starts to involve others, and than escalates. And no matter if you fall into one of the 2 categories at some point you've either raged or whined during a game of kdice or any other online game you've ever played. The question is how do we improve this aspect by taking away the chat box, while still allowing communication strictly for game sake? I offer a "limited" chat with pre-typed messages in a drop-down box that allows players to deliver in-game messages, but at a controlled state. Simple phrases like "Good luck everyone" or "Flag (insert color/place here)", along with some other typical common phrases used in light conversation. I also suggest highly that unique gamertags/usernames be done away with. In it's place, generic color based names would be distributed to the players at the table based on their location at the table. IE: 1st spot "RED" would be name listed, 2nd spot "GREEN" would be listed as players name, and so on and so on. The argument will be made this could allow silent and unnoticed PGA's, which is true. The combat this problem, I would like to introduce the idea of a report button function. If a player received "X" amount of reports for cheating gameplay, a MOD would be issued to see what was going on and track the history of that user and any participating players in the cheat. You would only be allowed to report a player once a month, to allow a fair and even portrayal of the individual and not allow 1 single person to load 1000s of votes to another. A single vote cast during a month allows that player to rest assured his vote cast will be against that player for an entire month and if others feel the same way, he will be gone. It will also help the MOD figure out who the "real" cheaters are as with no gamertag or chat, the person would not even know who they are reporting. This would lead to people being less likely to just spam the report button on people they "didn't like" as they would not know who was being reported besides the color of the person during THAT single game. This would be a clear shake up of the system no doubt, and would take a lot of getting used to, especially from the very very vocal community, but I believe with the forums/message board still be around with the unique usernames on display, you would get a much more lively message board. In the long run, would cheating still be an issue? Yes. Would arguments still happen? Yes. But the likely hood of both would and should decrease. Just because you can't stop a fire instantly doesn't mean you don't start to put it out. These are just ideas I feel would start putting out a fire that been burning a long long time. |

I'm not Ryan's accountant, so I have no idea how much money he makes from memberships, but I'd reckon the revenue stream from memberships+ads is probably just enough to break even (considering the opportunity cost of Ryan's time spent with maintenance) or make a modest profit. If he could get 5000 thousand "fresh faces" as paying members, sure it'd be worth it for him to do that even if he'd alienate the regulars. OTOH, I don't see how eliminating the chat would help him recruit thousands of new members. "Kdice - a multiplayer dice war game with no chat", so what? Bitter feuds and profanities could be done away with in many other (better) ways, including chat filters, chat moderator volunteers etc. ____ What was not discussed until now, but probably a relevant aspect is how the lack of chat and the proposed anonimity would affect the gameplay. First, even if there were pre-typed messages like " flag colour/place" or "1/2 brown?", they would be utterly and completely useless. No one in their right mind would ever accept a vflag or a truce offer cause the other guy could backstab without any penalty. Why? Cause there's no penalty to it and its perfectly legal (there's no rule against stabbing). Backstabbers can be kept in check by their fear for a bad reputation. But without a unique gamertag, how will you know that you were backstabbed by red in a previous game, perhaps just 10 mins ago. It'd promote and reward a different playstyle, one that I'm sure will generate just as much anger and bitterness as the chat. But that's just my honest opinion. And before you'd assume that I dislike your proposal just cause it affects me personally, I can assure you that I don't. I haven't ever paid any membership fee here or anywhere else, and I'd welcome the thousands of new players who would flood the site after the chat was eliminated. |

at 6:17 AM, Tuesday January 6, 2015 CST Funny Thrillho, your always worried about "whos alt"? And have yet to realize this name has been around before you knew what this game was, check stats. And this isn't my main...perspective. So if this isn't your main, who's alt are you? I'm not curious because of your start date, just curious because you berate me often and I don't know who I'm ignoring. If you want to remain a mystery that's ok too. |

at 6:22 AM, Wednesday January 7, 2015 EST The "no gamertag" feature is simple. If you want to leave feedback for that player, you can, just as a "color". So for example, I'm red and I stab you. You click my name "red" since gamertags are gone, and a box would apear much like Deadcode tools review. You click a box that fits the description, "Stabbed", and write a review. Then a day down the road I enter a room with you, when you click their name/color the same box will appear, along with the previous review. I am sure they could also do it in a way infractions piled up a person would be banned/suspended/time out'd.
Finding simple ways to leave feedback or make it unattractive to stab/play dirty will be the easiest part of the process but a vital one. In short again what I propose is: -No gamertags, all users in-game are announymous. -No in game chat or limited pre-typed chat dialogue. -Peer review system that will be STRICTLY based off in-game actions, not who that person is.* you would be reporting/reviewing a person whos name you won't see. Again, this is about the GAME and not any type of social enviorment. If you are here to socialize frequently and make "internet friends" this idea is not for you, but IMO, neither is this site deep down. This is a GAME, and a gaming website. The social element should matter little in the long run, and if did matter little, more NEW players would come and stick around as they would be less intimidated. |

at 9:03 AM, Wednesday January 7, 2015 EST I think you are shortselling the idea that the social aspect of the game can be used to effectively create a better game environment. Without a chat box or gamer id, you are just playing dicewars, which already exists.
Furthermore by removing the social portion of kdice, and all of the user input that Ryan has considered, players would still be governed by an ELO scoring system and have that crappy forum. Oh, wait. |

Bump a good, relevant, debatable post. |
