Flagging etiquette

If you flag to somebody, are you obligated to help him?

After I flagged blue (who then went on the fight brown) I became the strongest player on the board. Meanwhile brown was getting the better of blue and blue asked why I wasn't attacking brown. When I answered that I didn't think it was in my best interests to do so, brown became very angry. I understand that if brown had flagged blue I would have been obligated to take 3rd, but was I obligated to help him in his fight?

why would you settle for 3rd if you can have 2nd?

Would be great if a mod could make a blog post about this.

You don't have to take 3 if brown fights blue. You could kill brown or force blue to truce you to help him which gives you a shot at first.

You are not obliged to help him at all. As you said you should finish below him. Some people flag and then let you die while sitting for a better place. But that works only once when you do it to strong players.

This is not an issue of moderation, so I will defer to the older and more experienced players than myself.

However, me being me, I'll chime in on a couple of my personal beliefs.

1. Flags are not transitive
2. Early flags should be countered (tournaments withstanding)
3. Flagging someone does NOT mean they have to accept it
4. Flagging someone does NOT mean they can't hit you
5. Flagging someone does NOT mean you have to help you
5.a. An Exception can be if a flag was weak AND accepted AND stopped the growth of the flagee, in that case do what your morals say you should do (and consider if they will accept a weak flag again in the future).

But more to the point. You should not help him in his fight. He could offer to render the flag you gave him inactive and offer you a 1/2. You are not obligated to fight other people's battles for no personal gain. But that being said, if you were a 1-hit and he could have gained land from not accepting your flag, you should, in my opinion, help (if he asks for it).

But as your post title accurately describes, this is etiquette and by no means a rule. Stabbing is legal, for example. And mods will do nothing about it.

Good question. I hope to hear more from some of the top players if they care to spend the time sharing their opinions.

Flagging to someone doesn't mean you can't stab them either

there are no rules with flags.

do you.

I think the most post that should be made is that you play how you want to play and no punishment will be had.
