The best indicator for skill in killing is kills per root game. Here are the KPRG stats for August.

at 9:54 AM, Monday September 2, 2013 EDT If kills in a game were assigned randomly to the players, the distribution of kills to a player would go as the binomial distribution. The mean of the binominal distribution would go as the number of games, the variance of the binomial distribution would go as the number of games, so the standard deviation would go as the square root of the number of games. Players who exhibit skill in killing will have a higher ratio of kills to standard deviation, or higher ratio of kills per root game.
Yes it is. |

at 10:57 AM, Monday September 2, 2013 EDT Skill in killing doesn't just mean getting lots of kills. In fact, often it's not wise to try and go for an extra kill. It usually means overextending, risking a higher place or it's wasting dice trying to +0 and -1 attack just to get a higher kill ratio. So the most skilled players won't usually have the highest kill ratio. They also have to think twice about ignoring flags to get kills on the higher tables. Kills are not worth a pge. Basically, killing on the higher tables often involves social skills
Getting high kills per game often means playing lower tables where its easier to kill people. You can probably argue a bit about my points but the fact will remain that it's another useless skill where noobs like grandgnu end up as "most skilled". No offence for the players in particular but if your current top 12 consists of averagely skilled players at best, it's a bad sign for the usefulness of your stat. I'm not questioning the math behind this stat. Only this stat oversimplifies things too much for it to be a measure of "skill" |

at 1:42 PM, Monday September 2, 2013 EDT The binomial distribution, like the TAPL, has no soul. It measures both "positive" and "negative" skill. It measures any skill that affects killing, whether it is scoring kills for their own sake, or part of another strategy.
With the new point setup, the typical game has two subgames: for positive points (first/second) and for zero points (third or third/fourth). Players for the positive points are likely to be less deadly for the reasons you pointed out, but players for zero points are likely to be more deadly because they need to knock out the other zero point players. Either knock them out directly, or assist, by killing extra islands, setting up other players to be finished by someone else. The bottom line: If you encounter one of these players, their threat to you is directly correlated with their position on this list. |
