at 6:10 PM, Friday September 24, 2010 EDT Was an interesting article. Divisive and single issue politics are tools of ignorance, but people want some ideal to grasp to in these trying times.
The rise of the Tea Party in the US stems from similar sentiments to those that are fueling the nationalistic parties in Europe. Although the manifestations are different since the US is a two party system well Europe suffers and benefits from a much more diverse party system. It will be interesting to see how democratic parties change and respond over the next 5-10 years. |

at 8:58 PM, Friday September 24, 2010 EDT Parties like this tap into the emotions created over the past 25 years by the massive growth in disparities between executive and employee salaries. Gracious compensation isn't necessarily bad, but the animosity we see towards Wall Street is emblematic of how discouraged the middle class has become.
With the obvious fault within themselves, and not the foreign hordes the demonization of immigrants has evolved into a national drama. All the while the fear and hostility scares immigrant groups, and annihilates their political capital to draft laws giving immigrants more rights. Immigrant wages are lower, the middle class is united against an economically vital group, and the executives are getting richer and richer. The invisible hand is being wielded these days by those that want you to think there is one. |

at 6:27 AM, Saturday September 25, 2010 EDT it was not a very accurate article, I can say that in norway we have the progress party at 22%, but they are in no way similar to the sweden democrats. the sweden democrats started with a core of people from neo nazi and other rasistic groups.
the progress party is really not the same, they removed most of their rasistic elements more than 20 years ago. they are against immigration, but that hardly makes them rightwing extreemists. to compare the progressive party (populists) and the sweden democrats (racisits) is almost like calling the republican party a raceist party. |
