Open discussion on cheating and the punishment deserved for violations

I'm about to logoff for the night, so I'll read the responses in the a.m.

Some people here think the rules are too soft toward cheaters (I catch flack from these people). Some people here think I'm too hard on cheaters (I catch flack from these people). Some people think the site is not moderateble (I catch flack from these people).

Point is that I know I can't please everyone, so I'd like to know what the community thinks about cheating and how it should be dealt with. I know, I know, a new IP can easily be obtained. I know, I know, alt accounts can be created. However, based on the tools I have been given, what would YOU do to moderate this site if given the chance?

Let's keep our responses above a 5th grade reading level if possible.

And if at all possible, please post from your main account (if it hasn't been banned already). I'd like to know who is speaking without having to access my IP spreadsheet FFS.

Thrax

the rogerb/trendz situation has made me think of something new. trendz is all defensive that the ban be limited to whichever IP address the nuke came from, instead of all of his accounts.

why not do both? this would be a strong reason against sharing accounts, especially with suspicious people (cough, cough, adam, leek). the only danger would be that your password better be foolproof, so that no one can 'steal' it like how adam 'stole' trendz's.

I've submitted a list of ideas to Ryan oulining harsher punishments for violations including:

-harsher 1st offense punishment........perhaps 2 weeks/1 month/IP ban
-quicker IP ban/permanent ban of all accounts on that IP (which can only be done by Ryan)
-punishment of main accounts for violations committed by alts
-possibly docking career points or removing trophies (which can only be done by Ryan)

Ya except that would suck when you honestly earn 10k without sharing, PGAing, or Nuking and you are the only one who knows the account info, and then someone guesses a password like "winner" and loses 5k blatantly nuking on 2ks with mods watching, while you were at school not even playing kdice, and you get IP banned and all your current accounts banned as well, especially ones that you just waited a month to get unbanned for a false PGA accusation.

See what I mean? I wish there was a way to Perma ban IPs that have been known to nuke, but unfortunately its easy to reset your IP, and if you use the above system monte suggested, then I would be banned for doing absolutely NOTHING except respectfully and fairly playing this game.

Yo Thrax, who was it on the account at the time of the nuking? What other accounts were traced to the IP at the time?

its your own goddamn fault for having a password that is guessable. "winner"? jesus christ, man. why not try something less obvious, like "kdice".

and didnt anyone else notice when adam chimed in on one of these threads in the past week saying something about how he already explained to Ryan 600 days ago an easy way to stop people from proxying in? so apparently there is a way to stop it, regardless of how easy it is to reset your IP. at least adam thinks its easy to stop.
