Even if I travel to some other country, it won't be to live there. It won't be to pay their taxes. It won't be to vote in their elections. It won't be to go to a job there. So what will I learn by visiting one of these places? What can't I learn by searching the internet?

The first thing to be well informed is NOT watching the TV. It's the same problem everywhere even if yours is spefically idiot.
Second point, prefer the press.
Third, read the international press from other countries (that's why learning another language is usefull. Try the Brit one then. Why not indian or canadian eventually ? I dont know, what u want but another one than the US in complement) to see other points of view and make your idea.
Fourth, why not reading arabian press reviews too, just to see what they say if you're interested by the middle east as u say. To compare and understand what they really think even if you dont agree.
Fith. Never trust any media. Just try to compare and understand, that's the point.
