Yes, there are a ton of weirdos on the web (looks at Yodel) and parental control is essential. What I am getting at, however, is completely different. This is a gaming site, not a porn site, not a deviant support site (looks again at Yodel). The content of this site, both in terms of the chat, player reviews, and the forum posts is, at times, X-rated (see the OP). The fixes to eliminate such content are easy, but the site administration cannot be bothered to implement them. I have blocked this site from my kids' use for the reasons I have stated. I simply lament the fact that such intervention is necessary for what should be an appropriate site for most age-groups.
And yes, Yodel, I approve of my kids reading, which is why my 3rd grader reads at a 9th grade level and 1st grader reads at a 5th grade level. However, computer literacy, including use of the web, is an essential skill for all age groups. It would simply be nice if Ryan could administer this site in a reasonably responsible fashion, instead of enabling the neurotic crap that goes on in the game and the community. |

Just because she wants the kids to know how to use a computer or that they're top-notch readers doesn't mean they don't also play outside. They could be pretty good, well rounded kids - we don't know. The bottom line is that it's stacker's call and she's gotta do what she thinks is best for her family. At least she is active and interested, and paying attention to what the kids are up to online, which is more than many parents these days. And her faulting Ryan for inconsistent site management isn't exactly a new statement either, one which many of us share. |
