Dom Score Change and Other Updates
Posted By: Ryan at 10:54 AM, Monday September 1, 2008 EDT
I'm still working on multi table tournaments and hope to test them this month to go live next. But I managed to get a few updates in for this month including an important but slight change to dom scoring.
In short: dominance scoring increases in value as the game goes on (but still caps off to avoid farming). The effect is that if you're knocked out early you will get less dom points than if you were to hang on for a bit (all things being equal). The goal of this change is to make comebacks a little more lucrative. Watch the dom meter and you'll see how things change.
Other small changes:
- chat box word wrapping fixed
- some db optimizations
- dom fixes for suicides (commit previous turn dom at end of round)
- sitting during game bug fixed
- dom max is 1/2 size of map
- new all player leaderboard (see top 25->click more)
- map sizes based on normal distrbution with a mean of 35 and a standard deviation of 4 ( most maps will be around 35 +-4 with some outliers)
- fixed a bug that caused tables to lock up

??? Did you want to say The query takes to much time. Let the database work. Make a query on a view instead of a table. The data of the view has the first 100 players in it. This should maximize your speed |

Still getting used to the new scoring system. It makes it better for those who hang in there but may also encourage keeping your pals alive. EG |

The Dom has been tweaked too far the other way. You can now sit and get "dom" while your pal finishes off 6th and 7th. At least with the previous settings you had to either get a move on or leave. |

at 10:21 PM, Friday September 5, 2008 EDT hey Ryan, is it possible to lengthen the event log? I'd like to go back to when I'd accidentally hit someone I don't want to or find out why a player is only attacking me, in case they're grudgeful.

at 9:23 PM, Saturday September 6, 2008 EDT The Dom change also ends up creating a much more net negative score on all of the players.
For example, I just finished a 5 round game where two people got about half of the map in about 3 turns due to fantastic starts, and everyone else was destroyed. People lost tons of points, and the winners got hardly any in return. It puts a lot more emphasis on luck, but isn't that the "wrong" way to take the game? People shouldn't learn to be annoying pricks all game so they can survive so their dom kicks in, but rather to learn to play strategically when they have bad starts. Also, the way to test the change this new system will have on the game won't be to look at how the top 25-placed scores are figured, but rather looking at what score it took to get 500th place last month as compared to 500th this month. It'll show you more what happens to those who have some bad starts and end up with a ruined month. :| It's no fun losing more than what the table is worth... |

at 11:05 AM, Monday September 8, 2008 EDT JDizzle: yes. I'll put it on the list, I can make it quite a bit bigger. Maybe I can just clear it at the start of a new game.
Bullislander05: It's the same net points each game points are just balanced a little different. The difference is it is harder to take dominance points of you're knocked out early. It makes a little more sense now to hang on to see if you can improve. It also makes it a bit more risky to be aggressive the first few rounds (because you don't get rewarded for early dom and if you fail you'll lose quite a bit). The slight changes here allow for bad luck to be overcome easier later in the game. |

"the punishment for those who get a fucked up start and die early is quite harsh." Many people complained about this...can't we do something about it? I also think that losing 450 points (or more) at a 500 level table is quite harsh, especially when you have to start last and only have one 4 stack left...(only one example) |
