The True Island

I'm talking about the island in tournament games that is entirely detached from all other lands aka a floater. It happens only on occasion but is always the source of much debate and drama.

What should the unofficial/official rule be?

In situations where the islander does not win the game on the mainland, he/she has the power with one invincible land to end turn for eternity. The winner of the mainland can do the same..and so creates the rare situation of a total stalemate. Another important factor to keep in mind is that the islander is disadvantaged in play by essentially having one less land to use from the onset.

In this rare case, I feel an automatic roll for first place is appropriate. Others?

the official rule should be Ryan needs to figure out a way for this to not exist.

in the meantime, I'll give my usual opinion on etiquette situations.

do whatever you want.

I suggest they win and then next game kill them for not compromising. This will work wonders and it will mean others who ever get this happen to them, will feel the fury in the next round. Such a harsh game.... kdice

The few times I've had the island, I'll offer very quickly to take the lowest possible place that will survive to the next round. The other players have always been very agreeable to that, perhaps because they've been screwed by so many past assholes who demand 1st. Sometimes, if my mainland seems to have an above-average start, I'll initially ask for one place higher. Note that it's proper to make this offer immediately, not after you've tried to fight mainland and pissed off a couple people.

I agree with Monte's approach: settle it asap.

Imo, the island guy needs to take 2nd or even like Monte suggests, the lowest place that doesn't lose points.

Of course the island guy has some leverage to bargain for first (or a roll off for 1st). Technically you couldn't even blame him for demanding first and going on autoend if needed. But why should the winner on the main land have to agree to that?

Basically, it's a messy situation where anyone could be a jerk if they wanted to. So some standard solution would be nice. The key is that island person and mainland winner agree to something.

It depends on the people playing, generally I would say that the one who has the floater should be 2nd, unless they have, or want to use leverage,

say you have the floater and a spot on the main land aswell you can offer to roll, but demanding 1st with three or one land will get you eliminated as greeen put it, unless you're the last two players it can be pulled off

I have seen instances off these three cases
