vflagging etiquette

Hi all, I'm new to the game, and just wondered if someone could clear something up- how binding is a verbal flag considered to be? (clearly it has no actual power, but there are manners...)
I played a game where 1st and 2nd was pretty clear, so I vflagged to someone in 3rd... Who then screwed up big time and was pretty much out of the game. Is it acceptable to then start encroaching his territory so that I can compete with the others, or if I vflag does that basically commit me to rolling over and accepting fate (or being very rude...)?

also vflagging to someone means to take a place below him most of the time.
unless someone really screws up and like suicides. but then they usually relize that they screwed uo and just flag out.

It's legally binding.
