Ninja Flags

Most people who are "new school" do not understand the older meaning of a ninja flag. It is hard to explain, but Grun did a good job of explaining what the flag system was originally, during ELO days. The old complaints of a ninja flag made much more sense when people complain about ninja flags, because there was nothing anyone, including first place, could do about a ninja flag except unflag.
The current use of these words is closer to "mercy" flagging, or something of the sort. If you are in second all game, and someone who was below you attacks, takes some space, and flags second, he is asking for mercy from 1st place. The game does not immediately end, and you still have a chance to fight and take back second place from this mercy flagger. I'm not sure if this is a pandemic, or just a few ignorant kdicers, but a ninja flag, in the old sense of the word, is impossible with today's flag system. The only way a ninja flag will work is if 1st place is a player who respects all flags no matter what, which is why respecting flags is an art, and not a science. |

at 10:33 PM, Sunday June 15, 2008 EDT I define ninja flagging as extending yourself and spreading yourself thin to reach a place higher than you should have given the circumstances, and then flagging.
If you can defend your higher position, then I wouldn't call it ninja flagging, unless the 1st place person is between you and the (now) lower ranked people--that could be called a mercy flag, but I'd still call that ninja flagging, because you're really asking the 1st place person to give you the higher place even though you didn't really earn it. A similar example would be someone who is split into two or three groups that won't ever connect, and flags just because they have enough spaces at the moment to be in 2nd/3rd place or whatever. They might have a pocket of spaces behind the 1st place player and are hoping their flag will be "respected" even though again, it's not really justified. One clear sign of a ninja flag is if the flag is much higher than the player's actual place a couple of turns after the flag, and the person doesn't reflag for their new place. With regard to "mercy" flagging, I don't think you always have a chance to take back the place from the "mercy flagger". Often the 1st place player is in the way, and won't let you cut through to fight for 2nd. It's really up to the 1st place player at that point to decide whether or not to respect the ninja flag. I think one of the key factors is often whether or not the ninja flagger was in a position to damage the 1st place player when (or before) they threw the flag. |
