KDice Trainer for iPhone
Posted By: These cards suck at 1:11 PM, Thursday April 16, 2009 EDT
KDice Trainer for iPhone is now on the App Store! Ryan worked on making a fast single player version of KDice that captures all of the elements that make kdice.com popular. You play against up to 6 out of 99 bots and work your way from 100th place up to 1st if you’re lucky.
The interface is clean and clear and allows you to configure the type of game (2-7 players, map size, difficult) without a configuration screen. Configuration screens are confusing and often make things more complex than required. In this app there is no configuration screen but instead these configuration options are built into the leaderboard where you select who you want to play.
The leaderboard has 99 bots named after some of the top KDice players. The AI is fairly complex giving each bot unique decision making combinations. As you work your way up the leaderboard the bots get smarter and harder to beat.
The touch screen on iPhones is a natural fit for selecting areas to attack. You simply slide your finger from the territory you’re attacking from to the territory you want to attack. Even with a full map attacking is easy and accurate.
The landing page:

On the App Store:

2 problems in my opinion, one of which i hope is constructive criticism. 1. wen attacking a land or selecting a land in the very south, i catch the bottom option / leaderboard / help / flag / endturn way too often. i have no idea how or even if it can be changed, but i suggest lifting the map up a few millimetre on the user face. 2. wheres my bot ry...most dischuffed =) great app 5* awe |

at 1:04 AM, Sunday May 3, 2009 EDT Ryan I found a few bugs! :D
Bug 1: You can use a 1dice land to attack unlimited times in a row. Steps to repro: 1. Select land to attack with (must have 2 or more dice). 2. Lose the battle... now you can continually attack with the 1 dice left over. Bug 2: You can quickly skip turn right after you lose a roll and this avoids actually losing the roll. Steps to repro: 1. Select land to attack with. 2. Attack. 3. (Be very quick) When you see that you lost the roll; quickly press 'skip turn'. Result: it is like you didn't attack at all. |

at 1:11 AM, Sunday May 3, 2009 EDT I also found that quitting the game using the 'Home' button or lock button causes some unusual things to happen when you come back into the game. For example: 1. Sometimes it makes you some other color and when that color loses it says you lost in that position. Even though you could not control that color. 2. Sometimes the map is wiped clean and everyone has to start all over again populating the map. This almost always results in you losing, because you go last.
I typed the last two messages fast (and late at night) so if the messages aren't clear email me. (my profile email) Btw, I'm starting an iPhone software company very soon. Stay tuned. Mac is on the way to my house and I'm going to crank out a lot of 3.0 apps. Also got a win-server-2008 box for web service hosting and mssql2008. |

at 12:02 PM, Saturday May 9, 2009 EDT Found 3 more bugs.
One is ... You can use any land to attack any other land on the map without having to share a border. If anyone cares about these let me know otherwise i'm going to stop posting these bug reports because i don't think the developer cares / reads them. |

at 11:09 PM, Saturday May 9, 2009 EDT My Review (I understand it's a work in progress)
First I have to say, the interface was really buggy and glitched out on me a lot. If Ryan is wondering, that's probably not the only reason the game isn't popular. I have spoken to a few people about the app, and basically here's what I've surmised: 1) The app does not appeal to a broad audience like KDice or Dice Wars does. Basically, you can only appreciate this app if you're familiar with KDice, which really narrows your consumer base. The game definitely needs to be dumbed down and simplified. You might want to consider adding a starting tutorial as well. A wall of Q&A text is not the greatest enticement for a prospective consumer. Right now the only people who have even considered downloading the game are KDice community members, because the reviews are so poor. 2) The interface is glitchy. I understand this will be fixed with time, but it's only one of many problems that plague this app. The app alienates people who have never played dicewars, and even people who are familiar with KDice are somewhat confused by the setup. The missing in-game stats on each player make it difficult to size enemies up, and the way flagging operates really needs to change. I'll try to gloss over the poor AI, which really takes away from the game. The AI shows absolutely no discretion in who or how it attacks, making it difficult to strategize or stage a comeback. IMO get rid of flags all together, and add them in later. 3) The "climb to the top" aspect of the game is just nonsensical and needs to be dropped. People don't enjoy KDice because of the ladder, in fact many players avoid the top 25 all together. They enjoy KDice because of it's strategic depth, which doesn't seem to be explicitly encouraged in this app. In my honest opinion, a straight port of Taro Ito's dicewars would have been a more successful app. This app has some major flaws and the "ladder" aspect only serves to complicate things. Bottom line: This app is okay for a first go-around, but it needs a lot of work if you expect it to gain popularity (outside of KDice). And don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy KDice - and I know a good dicewars app would be very successful on the iPhone, this just isn't it. But what do I know, I was probably high when I wrote this. |

at 7:23 PM, Sunday May 10, 2009 EDT Thanks for the feedback. An update was released last week that fixes some of the bugs mentioned.
Yesterday it passed 2000 sales so thanks for checking it out. I'll keep hitting bugs and plan to get an easy multiplayer running soon. I think 2000 is a good number for having some tables always running. As for the leaderboard, I know its unnecessary, but I don't want too many config screens and I'm happy with having just two screens. The leaderboard captures difficulty settings (higher up the leaderboard is harder), #players and map size, at the same time as giving you something to work for. I agree with the flags, maybe I'll take it out of the lite version. Good feedback thanks! |

at 3:12 PM, Thursday May 21, 2009 EDT its pretty cool, I will say though, if you were able to connect it to kdice.com with our original logins and play from our main accounts I would pay more for it.
if iphones allowed flash life would be much easier. |
