Well, sure, one could infer the gender of this player from its (I'm using that pronoun advisedly, having considered the problem extensively) somewhat biased username. Arguably there are two components, separated by an underscore, and each clearly has feminine connotations. I am not going to make that inference. Nor am I going to review the player's conduct, use of language, trustworthiness, playing ability or luck; those things are uninteresting to me, and also I've forgotten all the details of the game. No, instead I'm going to highlight an oversight in the Wikipedia data auditing process. If one were to consult http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michaela, one would be confronted with a very brief recent historical breakdown of the name's spread and distribution from Germany, into the United Kingdom and finally North America. The paragraph culminates in the assertion (at the time of writing) "its popularity peaked in 1997, the year in which the popular TV series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman first aired in the U.S. with its lead character Michaela Quinn." Well, yes. Though there is no source for that particular claim, other statistics do indicate a spike of its usage in that year. And of course it is entirely possible that new parents all across America named their child after a television character. It happens all the time -- my first name is "My name is Earl", for example, and several of my friends bare similar monikers. However, without an identified mechanism - which is to say, some identifiable means of knowing explicitly that parents were choosing the name because of the lady in their televisions - there is only evidence of causation, and not correlation. What I'm trying to say it, if you're going to name you child after something, give it the whole name, and not just an arbitrary part. For posterity, otherwise the statistics are unremarkable white noise. Three stars; indeterminate gender.
